About The Student Loan Alliance

The Student Loan Alliance (SLA) is a nonprofit organization focused on developing long-term solutions to address the student loan crisis with a key focus on leveraging independent nonprofit counselors as “trusted advisors.”  Alliance members deliver efficient counseling and timely assistance by implementing best in class systems and processes. As the cost for higher education continues to rise, the number of graduates unemployed or underemployed is increasing.  Today, nearly two-thirds of all students depend on student loans, obtaining $27,000 in loan debt on average.  Student loans represent over 37 Million loans with over 27% of borrowers 30 days delinquent and nearly 10% in serious default at any given time.  Total student loan debt now represents over $1 Trillion, which far exceeds total credit card debt that is less than $800 Billion today.  The student loan crisis affects many households across the country and SLA is committed to addressing the crisis by promoting partnership, developing effective outreach and awareness campaigns, and providing streamlined education and counseling.

Key principles that are core to SLA’s existence include:

  • Partnership and Collaboration between private, public, and non-profit organizations are critical to effectively address this crisis.  SLA believes that many organizations have more in common than differences.
  • Nonprofit Counseling and Education is a key component to improve borrower contact, provide comprehensive credit/budget counseling, and can be the most effective medium to bridge the gap between borrower and the servicer to deliver a reasonable and sustainable solution.
  • Scalability - Considering the growth of the crisis, SLA promotes counseling that is scalable to manage thousands of borrowers at any given time.  One key way this is accomplished is by using best in class systems and processes of our members.
  • Transparency – SLA prides itself in providing clear communication and transparency to all clients, both business and consumer, on their role throughout the process.
  • Trust – SLA develops key partner relationships and enters every borrower engagement with the intent to build mutual trust.
